Sadness and Hope

It was just a Monday morning, like any other. I was just getting settled in my work day when I saw an email from a friend. Her email went like this:

have you seen this? watched it tonight & found myself weeping. wonder what you think about it. sometimes just find myself curious about what would happen if i went to help in a place like this...

love, beck.

I watched the 12 minute video clip and have not been the same since. I decided this morning to create a blog with my friend because I can't NOT do something. You will find more information here about the situation in the Congo, the women that live there, their literal hell on earth. If after viewing this short video, you find yourself feeling like we did: shocked, disgusted, outraged, sad and yet inspired to DO SOMETHING, please go to the links at the right with information about what you can do.

I immediately sent this video to a bunch of friends, I got one response that spoke to me strongly. "
The difficult thing, I find in many cases, is that there are so many people in need, everywhere. Scope and scale vary from instance to instance, but for me and my empathetic/sympathetic/emotional/wanting to help self, it's overwhelming just scratching the surface, you know?"

This really resonated with me because I realized most people that have an ounce of goodness in them must feel similarly -- completely overwhelmed with the amount of poor, oppressed, despondent people that live in our world with us. Many in our own neighborhoods and communities. I accept that I cannot "save the world". I accept that I could be doing more in my own community to help those in need. And I will. But my heart aches for these Congolese women, mostly because it feels like no one around me even knew about this! The gross lack of media coverage, national or international on these women and their situation is astounding to me. They are crying out, they are desperate, they are alone and they must feel like no one is listening! It is like the classic nightmare when you are screaming at the top of your lungs and no one hears your cry.

It is our goal to use this Blog to help raise awareness. To record the cries of the Congolese people and play it for anyone who will listen. Please help us by sharing this blog with as many people as you know, exhorting them to do the same.
